IUPA 2019 Green Impact

The IUPA GreenSpirit Comittee has developed a simple app to help our members and our association track its green spirit. By this we mean our plastic and CO2 impacts as ultimate frisbee players, as ultimate communities in Indonesia, and overall as IUPA.

We launched the app in December 2019 and invited our members to use it for the first time in January 2020. The initial response was slow, so we did another push for members to do their assessments in mid-2020. Here are our results!

In 2019, based on the assesments of 34 players, we calculated that IUPA generated 221.8 Kg of plastic and 224,209 Kg of CO2. You can download the full PDF report here.

Meanwhile, let’s break it down!

221.8 Kg of Plastic

That’s equal to a pile of about 1267 frisbees. That many frisbee could be stack 212 meters high.

So let’s take a close look!

Here we can see an overview of the different categories of materials we used in 2019. By far the biggest environmental impact is from our sports equipement. In this year, 18% of our sports materials were organic (i.e. cotton, bamboo, wood, etc.)
When we get more specific we can see that each category of sports equiment generates about the same amount of plastic. Meanwhile, we can see that reusable plastic bottles actually amounted for more plastic generation than disposable bottles– it will be very interesting to see if this trend continues in 2020 to answer important questions: Do reusable bottles actually reduce plastic generation? If so, how many years does it take to compensate for disposable bottles?

224,209 Kg Of CO2

That’s equal to 49 cars driving all year long.

Here we can see what were the main sources of our CO2 generation during 2019. By far the biggest contributor were the flights to international tournaments. Close behind were flights to to domestic tournaments, and not to be discounted our local driving to play in our communities. On the far right, we see our first green impact– the purchase of plastic offsets by one of our members.

In 2020, our team has further developed our Impact App. It is now on its own domain of impact.ultiid.com and our basic code is on GitHub.

Stay tuned! In January 2021 we launch our 2020 player impact assessments! We can’t wait to start tracking our greens spirit progress over time.
